Tarot Tips From this Month’s Reader’s Night
Welcome back, friends.
I thought for this month I’d share what we talked about at this month’s Reader’s Night.
For those of who might not know, Reader’s Night is an event I hold at a local metaphysical store called The Witch’s Parlor. (Look it up, you’ll love it. Kendra the shop owner is the best). But essentially, we talk about reading tarot and practice readings as well. This past month, the attendees were asking about how to memorize meanings or how to keep the cards straight where you can read natural.
So I’ll share the tip I gave on how I do it. :D
I pick one word per upright card. That is my descriptor word for the card and the reversal is just the opposite meaning. So the example I gave during the event was the 8 of Pentacles. My word for this card is hard work. So a reversal would be slacking off or distracted or not interested.
You see how you can draw out several other words or ideas from oe descriptor word in the upright position.
Now, I need to be clear here. That doesn’t mean I don’t ever see or hear or think of another option to describe the card. By using this descriptor word, I let my intuition fill in the gaps. Maybe hardworking is where I start but perhaps there is something here that they are building instead that just requires time (with it being the 8th card in that suit). Perhaps the image on the card gives me a different meaning. But by not ruminating on all of the exact words and instead letting my intuition take the one word I have and go from there, I’m more flexible.
I will also say that with time, your word choices for the cards expands as you see different applications of the cards. Soon you might associated 2 or 3, or even 4 different meanings with one card and from there your intuition picks it up and runs with it.
All of this to say. Have fun with it. Use your guidebooks. You paid for them. This is just a trick I did when I knew I was going to start professional readings and I felt awkward reading my guidebook in front of clients. :D But your practice is your practice. I’ve been reading for 2 years now and there are still times where I want my guidebook. Sometimes, I’ll have a card pop out that doesn’t make sense until I look at the guidebook, because it was the wording in the guidebook that I really needed to hear or see first.
I wish you all the best of luck on your tarot journey. Have fun and I’ll see you next month.
